Charlestonians have been playing tennis since the early 1800s. The Charleston Tennis Center, Farmfield Avenue (west of Charleston on U.S. 17), is your best bet, with 15 well-maintained outdoor courts lighted for night play. The cost is only $3 per person per hour of court time. The center is open Monday to Thursday from 8:30am to 10pm, on Friday from 8:30am to 7pm, on Saturday from 9am to 6pm, and on Sunday from 10am to 6pm.

At the Shadowmoss Plantation Golf & Country Club, 20 Dunvegan Dr. (tel. 843/556-8251), nonmembers can play free (as space allows) daily from 7am to 7pm. Call ahead for court times.
